Postmenopausal Symptoms

What symptoms does genitourinary syndrome of menopause cause?

About 50% of postmenopausal women experience GSM, a collection of symptoms resulting from lower levels of the hormone estrogen in your body. This is a natural process that occurs when your ovaries reach the end of their reproductive cycle. Estrogen contributes to the genital functions that aid and support reproduction, so its absence can create conditions that cause negative side effects.

The vagina can, for example, lose its ability to retain moisture, becoming dry and tight and interfering with the enjoyment of sex. This may be accompanied by irritation or burning sensations. Urination may also be affected, with frequent urges to empty your bladder, painful sensations while urinating, or frequently recurring urinary tract infections.

GSM, a chronic condition, won’t improve over time without intervention, and you don’t need to have all the symptoms of GSM to be diagnosed with the condition.

How does your practice treat GSM?

Our practice uses laser energy to noninvasively transmit light energy to the collagen layer in the vaginal walls. This light energy converts to heat as it’s absorbed by the collagen tissue, setting off a controlled inflammatory response.

This healing response removes older, dry collagen and replaces it with new, refreshed tissue, which more readily retains moisture and restores much of the function of your vagina to a state closer to premenopausal conditions. You may feel that your vagina becomes firmer, but more flexible, with natural lubrication restored.

What can I expect from this treatment?

While your appointment will likely last longer, our laser treatment takes only about five minutes. Initial treatments include a series of three sessions, spaced six weeks apart. Your Broadview OBGYN caregiver will advise you if annual follow-up treatments are necessary.

Many women notice a difference after the first treatment, which is painless and allows you to return to your regular activities immediately afterward. You’ll likely feel even greater results over  the course of three sessions. Though you should abstain from sex for three days after a treatment, there are few side effects or complications connected with our laser treatments.
